Out of Many, One people: The Scottish

The Scottish people, ‘The Scots’, like the Germans and Irish, were encouraged to come to Jamaica after the country gained Emancipation. The move was an attempt by the Government of the day to establish European townships. Place with names like Culloden (the site of the famous Jacobite battle), Craigie and Aberdeen reflect strong Scottish ties.
In Kingston, the St Andrew Scots Kirk Church was founded in 1819 by a group of Scottish merchants.
It held the distinction of being Jamaica’s main Presbyterian Church until the 1965 merge with the Congregational churches to become the United Church of Jamaica and Grand Cayman.
As a church, the St Andrew Scots Kirk Church is one of the oldest in the island and is renowned for its excellent choir, the St Andrew singers, a noted contributor to Jamaican chorale music.
